In 1980 when John Lennon was killed, I was pretty young. I knew of the Beatles, of course, and that he was a part of them. But this was before I really listened to them. I distinctly remember thinking of him as an aging musician from a long time ago. By the ten year anniversary, I spent the night honoring one of my favorites by listening to most of his work that whole night. On the 25th anniversary, my roommates and I recorded an entire inebriated night of singing Lennon songs. This one is from his last album- its wise demeanor helps right now.

I spent much of the night sound designing the 2020 Great Quarantine. I share with you my pre-show/intermission playlist. Maybe the first voice I fell in love with was this guy’s- I always liked music as a little kid, but I distinctly remember the first time I heard a song that connected directly to me, through me, and lit up my entire person with a manic rush: Help, by the Beatles. I was maybe 11 or 12, and it set off a lifetime of pursuing that feeling. Track one comes from him (though Help could also easily apply to the 2020 GQ).
